Transporter Trailers

TMC designs and manufactures a comprehensive range of transporter trailers, including semi transporters, low loaders, and plant trailers.

Engineered for durability, strength, and ease of operation, these units ensure the safe and efficient transport of heavy machinery, vehicles, and oversized loads across industries such as construction, agriculture, civil contracting, and logistics.

Key Features

Heavy-Duty Construction
Built for transporting wheeled or tracked plant such as diggers, rollers, pavers, and compactors. Engineered for durability and stability under heavy loads.

Low Deck Height
Standard decks sit below 1 m (semi units < 0.9 m) for easier loading and a lower centre of gravity.

Hydraulic Rear Ramps
Heavy-duty hydraulic ramps with load-binder and chain restraint for safe travel. Hydraulic rams are all fitted with restrictor valves for safe lowering speed. Fold down rear support legs to protect the chassis when loading

Durable Decking
High-strength treated pine decking with steel reinforcement in outer bays. Steel omitted over tyres to prevent slippage when wet.

Secure Load Anchoring
Standard inward-facing siderails with vertical tie-bar anchors and chain eyes as standard.

Air Suspension with Dump Function
Air dump lowers the trailer for safer and easier loading (rear axle dump standard; full dump optional).

Integrated Storage
Rear dunnage and chain racks fitted under the beaver tail timber for tidy, accessible storage.

Flexible Configurations
Available as 2, 3, 4 and 5 axle pull trailers, tri-axle or quad-axle gooseneck semi’s, and for multiple plant combinations.

Customisation Options

Headboards & Load-Through Options

Wrap-around tubular headboard — can be certified as a rated load restraint. Fold-down headboard in steel or aluminium for loading through to truck. (Pull trailer) Front-end ramps or telescopic drawbar options to allow direct loading through to truck deck. (Pull Trailer)

Hydraulic Systems

Single-acting from tractor (1x pressure line), single-acting with valve bank on trailer (pressure + return), onboard powerpacks (petrol, diesel, or electric) or hand-pump backup option for manual ramp operation.

Deck & Load Accessories

Front chain trays in deck for securing gear digger boom support mid-deck to prevent surface damage, steps to deck and road cone holders, spare tyre carrier (underdeck wind-up or mounted on top/front) or side skirts under siderails for aesthetic finish.

Signage & Compliance

Over-width signage and lighting for loads beyond 2.5 m wide and amber beacons and reflective markings for compliance.

Toolboxes & Storage

Steel toolboxes rated for 60 kg distributed load (ideal for tie-downs or tools), additional toolbox mounts integrated with side skirts (semi models), and under-beaver tail storage racks for dunnage and chains.

Deck Configurations

Tailor the deck dimensions to accommodate specific machinery or oversized loads, ensuring optimal fit and transport efficiency. Top deck ramps for light vehicle transport (utes etc.) with adjustable width and under-ramp storage.

ISO Lock Preventions
Add ISO lock fittings to secure containerised freight, providing versatility for intermodal transport applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum length, width and weight limits for a semi transporter

Under New Zealand’s Vehicle Dimensions and Mass (VDAM) Rule, a standard semi-transporter can operate up to 19 m long, 2.55 m wide, and 4.3 m high, with a gross combination mass (GCM) of around 39–41 tonnes, depending on the axle setup and route. With an HPMV permit, operators can carry heavier loads (up to 19.45 m long), and with an Overweight Permit, the GCM can increase further using NZTA’s Variable Added Index (VAI) — for example, 25.2 t on a 3-axle or up to 30 t on a 4-axle group. Some routes may also require BESS certification for bridge crossings.

If a semi-transporter exceeds 2.55 m in width or 19 m in length, it is classed as an Overdimension Vehicle and must comply with NZTA’s Overdimension categories. Category 1 (up to 3.1 m wide) requires oversize signs and restricted travel times, Category 2 (3.1–4.1 m) adds pilot-vehicle and beacon requirements, and Categories 3–4 (over 4.1 m) require NZTA/OPIA permits, full route approvals, and sometimes engineering certification.

These rules apply only to indivisible loads and come with strict signage, lighting, and travel-time restrictions. Most TMC semi-transporters operate within Category 1 or 2 limits — standard-width units run freely under VDAM or HPMV, while over-width models (around 2.8 m) are used for heavy-machinery work. TMC assists operators with permit and route applications to ensure full compliance and smooth operation.

👉 Learn more: NZTA Factsheet 53 — Overdimension Vehicles and Loads

Over-width trailers (wider than 2.55 m) are classed as Overdimension vehicles under NZTA’s Vehicle Dimensions and Mass (VDAM) Rule 2016 and must comply with the requirements set out in Factsheet 53. While travel restrictions generally can’t be waived, NZTA can issue route-specific Overdimension or Swept-Path Approvals to allow controlled operation outside standard limits.

A Swept-Path Approval verifies that the tractor and trailer combination can safely travel a defined route without crossing into oncoming lanes or hitting roadside structures. This process involves engineering assessment and NZTA review before being added to the operator’s Overdimension Permit.

TMC assists customers in securing Swept-Path and Overdimension approvals for over-width trailers, ensuring all compliance steps are met before delivery.
