Proudly Kiwi-owned and operated since 1948, TMC is one of New Zealand’s leading heavy transport engineering companies, specialising in the design, manufacture, service, and repair of truck trailers and truck decks. With more than 75 years of experience, we build durable, high-performance transport solutions designed to keep our customers moving across New Zealand’s toughest conditions.
For over 75 years, we’ve built a reputation for keeping our customers moving through quality workmanship, innovation, and real-world reliability.
TMC offers the widest range of trailer types in New Zealand, each one custom-designed and precision-built to order. Using high-strength, lightweight steels and alloys, our trailers are engineered for performance, payload efficiency, and long-term durability, making them the preferred choice for many of the country’s largest freight and logistics operators.
All manufacturing takes place at our purpose-built Christchurch facility, where every stage of the process – design, engineering, fabrication, grit-blasting, painting, and final fit-out is completed in-house. This vertically integrated approach ensures total quality control and guarantees that every trailer leaving our factory is built to spec and built to last.
Recognising the importance of lifecycle support, TMC operates a nationwide service and repair network with dedicated workshops in Christchurch, Auckland, and Hamilton, supported by a network of authorised service agents across key transport hubs. From routine maintenance and repairs to full structural rebuilds, TMC provides the expertise and support operators need to minimise downtime and maximise productivity.
What sets TMC apart is the strength of our engineering heritage, family ownership, and customer-first mindset. Combining decades of hands-on experience with continuous innovation, we remain at the forefront of New Zealand’s trailer manufacturing industry, trusted by generations of transport operators to deliver solutions that perform, last, and drive their businesses forward.
TMC’s story began in 1948, when Ian Currie returned from World War II and founded the company that would go on to shape New Zealand’s trailer industry. During his wartime service as a mechanic with the New Zealand Scottish Regiment in Guadalcanal and Bougainville, Ian gained hands-on experience with heavy machinery and vehicle recovery, including working on one of the first American truck transporters ever seen by New Zealanders. That experience sparked his lifelong passion for engineering and inspired the creation of some of the first road transport trailers in New Zealand.
In 1973, Ian’s son Paul Currie joined the business, starting on the factory floor and learning every aspect of trailer manufacturing. By 1975, father and son became partners in the newly formed TMC Trailers Ltd, with Paul leading day-to-day operations and trailer design. Under his leadership, TMC moved into a purpose-built facility in Hornby, Christchurch in 1985. In 2017, Paul was awarded honorary lifetime membership of the TTMF (Truck Trailers Manufacturers Federation) for his outstanding contribution to the industry.
The next generation arrived in 1996, when Richard Currie joined the company. Bringing commercial experience and a strategic mindset, Richard modernised operations, strengthened customer service, and expanded TMC from a Canterbury-based manufacturer into a nationwide business. This included opening a dedicated Auckland service centre in 2015 and a Hamilton facility in 2020, extending TMC’s reach across New Zealand’s key freight corridors. The Hamilton site also features a dedicated COF inspection lane, allowing TMC to provide on-site vehicle inspections alongside servicing, repairs, and trailer maintenance, further enhancing convenience and support for customers in the upper North Island.
Today, TMC remains family owned and proudly Kiwi, supported by a strong management team and a loyal workforce, many with decades of service. This depth of experience and commitment underpins every trailer we build. With over 75 years of continuous operation, three generations of Currie leadership, and thousands of trailers on the road, TMC continues to lead New Zealand’s trailer manufacturing industry — built on the same values of innovation, quality, and customer focus that Ian Currie established back in 1948.
