Frequently Asked Questions

What are the maximum length and weight limits for flatdeck / platform trailers

Under New Zealand’s Vehicle Dimensions and Mass (VDAM) Rule, standard length limits are 20 m for a truck and full trailer, 19 m for a truck and semi-trailer, and 20 m for a B-train. With a High Productivity Motor Vehicle (HPMV) permit, these limits can extend up to 23 m for B-trains or full trailers, and 19.45 m for semi-trailers, with Gross Combination Mass (GCM) exceeding 50 tonnes depending on axle configuration and approved routes.

Container (Overweight/ISO) Permits allow operators to legally move heavier import/export containers beyond standard weight limits, while HPMV permits are generally used for domestic freight. Typical legal setups include around 39 T GCM for a 6×4 tractor with a tri-axle skeletal, and up to 44 T GCM for an 8×4 tractor with a quad-axle, giving payloads of roughly 24–26 tonnes — or around 30 T gross with a permit.

Permits are issued by Waka Kotahi NZTA (for state highways) and local councils (for local roads) through the NZTA Permit Portal. TMC flatdecks are built to meet full HPMV compliance, with optimised axle spacing, chassis geometry, and tare weight to maximise legal payloads.

Super Single 22.5” Tyres (wide single tyres)
Lower tare weight – fewer rims, tyres, and bolts reduce overall trailer weight
Less rolling resistance – improves fuel economy and slightly reduces CO₂ output.
Simpler maintenance – only one tyre per hub to check and replace.
Better tracking – fewer scrub forces on corners, reducing tyre wear on tri-axle setups.

19.5” Dual Tyres
Higher load tolerance per axle – twin tyres spread the weight, ideal for heavy or uneven loads.
Redundancy – if one tyre fails, the other can support the axle temporarily.
Lower deck height – smaller diameter tyres reduce overall trailer height.

We carry stock units for immediate delivery, and can often paint and fit these in your fleet colours within just a few weeks.
